What is Net Zero?

Measured over a year, a Net Zero Energy Home consumes as much energy as it produces. This project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of net zero housing on a community scale in Canada.

Background

NRCan contributed almost $2 million to a national demonstration project to build Net Zero Energy Housing Communities in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Alberta. NRCan’s funding will support the technical design and engineering of these houses. Builder partners were selected to finance and construct these houses.

Objective

buildABILITY Corporation and Owens Corning Canada worked with 5 leading builders to construct 26 net zero energy homes. These homes helped to set the standard for recognition of net zero energy homes in the marketplace.

Quotes

  • "This is an emerging technology. As electricity prices go up and as solar panel prices go down, businesses and the public will increasingly adopt these measures. This project helped to debug the adoption process so in the future, these measures can be adopted seamlessly. We have built a road through uncharted land so that others can drive through effortlessly. -- Michael Lio, President of buildABILITY."
