JOSH SKAPIN, CALGARY HERALD.

The first of Mattamy’s net-zero homes was unveiled last week as a show home, and four spec homes with the same energy-saving standards are expected to be ready in spring 2016. Cityscape is Mattamy’s first Calgary-based community, accessed off Metis Trail in northeast Calgary.

Pricing on the net-zero homes is expected to be released sometime this week.

“We believe we should be on the cutting-edge of many areas of the business,” says Don Barrineau, division president for Mattamy. “We believe the right thing to do is to try to advance the business and ultimately our industry from both an energy efficiency and sustainability standpoint. That’s where the world is going.”

Mattamy Homes is part of the Net Zero Energy Homes Project, which will see at least 25 of these homes constructed in Alberta, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec. The project is supported by more than $4 million in funding and in-kind contributions from Natural Resources Canada’s ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative, Owens Corning Canada and the housing industry.

“The net zero project aims to prove that existing technologies can be utilized to make these ultra-efficient homes available at a community-scale,” says Andy Goyda, Canadian builder lead and marketing development manager for Owens Corning Canada in a release. “As Canada’s largest homebuilder, Mattamy is well-positioned to demonstrate that these homes can be available to the average homebuyer.”
